Maryska's Glowing Vegetarian Skin

Today's guest blogger is naturopathic student, Maryska Taylor. She has been battling psoriasis with a vegetarian lifestyle. Take it away Maryska...

P.S. Today is also her birthday!
Maryska is rocking her veggies!

I was very excited to get my copy of the Eat-Clean Diet Vegetarian Cookbook in the mail last week! Newly vegetarian this past month, I have been finding it hard to come up with recipes that are still Clean but not full of starches. Before this I was a major carnivore – loving my steak, my chicken and my turkey. However, I have learned that, though those foods are not inherently bad, they have been potentially wreaking havoc on my poor body.

I am a Naturopathic medical student at CCNM in Toronto, and have had psoriasis for several years. I have tried everything under the sun to heal my skin, and have always been aware of the connection between my intestinal health and my skin. Through my recent research I have learned that people with psoriasis often have difficulty digesting protein and that these foods are hardest on your intestines. Red meat is especially bothersome as it contains arachidonic acid, which aggravates inflammation in the body.

Following naturopathic philosophy and wanting to get to the root cause, I have explored many different food eliminations over the last several years to see the effect on my skin – but I have never eliminated meat completely. This has been mainly because I enjoy lifting weights and was concerned that I would not be able to get enough protein to support my efforts in the weight room and build a lean physique. However, I have learned that this is not true and Tosca’s cookbook is proof that muscle-building protein and Clean Eats are not limited to chicken breasts and steamed broccoli!

So, here I am embarking on what I am hoping will be a healing journey with my tools in hand – one of which is my new Eat-Clean Diet Vegetarian Cookbook!

I’m looking forward to the results!

  1. Happy Birthday Maryska! I hope you find great results with your new vegetarian path. I have tried a few times throughout the years without much success. I also have psoriasis (38 years) and love to see how others have overcome this disease. Though most of my skin afflictions had left during my preganancies, my psoratic arthritis has stayed. As a family of five, we rarely eat red meat now. Chicken is our staple protein with eggs and fish. Please keep us posted on your successes. I'm sure Tosca's new book will get you going fantastically.

  3. Happy Birthday Maryska!! Wishing you the best of luck with your psoriasis and vegetarian eating!! I was diagnosed with psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis in my late 20's (I'm 40 now). Do you have your own blog that you will be posting to? I'd be interested in following your progress.

  4. Batteling it myself eliminating meat helped!
Also my omega 6 and 3 had an unhealthy balance. 3 is harder to get. Look into that. That made a huge impact on me.
Is there somewhere you can do a live blood examination? That shows your specific needs!
    Good luck girl! :)

  5. Happy Birthday Maryska! I hope you'll be back! I would be interested in the results of your experiment. I have a daughter with eczema whose diet has been restricted many times in an attempt to resolve her skin inflammation. I haven't been able to do so through food yet but it is an interesting and complex puzzle to keep working on!

  6. Hello there, thanks for the wonderful post. I'm also dealing with psoriasis since 2005 and after trying almost everything, now I am managing my condition with the help of holistic (natural) healing condition. A healthy, restricted diet, a positive lifestyle, regular physical work out, relevant dietary supplements and most importantly, stress management techniques are helping me keep my psoriasis well under control to live a better life. I am also managing a blog since 2014 where I am sharing my own experiences along with relevant useful info from the Internet. This is my blog's link if anyone would wish to give a visit. Many thanks and God bless you. Self to be achieved through self healing Psoriasis Self Management
