Detox Defined

Here’s a simple 7-day detox plan that most people in good health can follow. This is an effective but not too aggressive detox:


1) On days one and two, stick with liquids. Drink only pure spring or filtered water, water with lemon squeezed into it, herbal teas, juiced leafy greens, or bone broth. I like to use 50% water mixed with 50% coconut water since coconut water has valuable electrolytes in it. It's a good idea to drink at least eight glasses of water or other fluids daily up to a maximum of about 100 ounces per day. Avoid fasting if you are taking prescription drugs, if you have hypoglycemia, diabetes, or another medical condition (such as pregnancy), or if you feel dizzy, nauseated, or experience cramps.

2) On days three through seven, add brown rice (1 cup throughout the day), fruits, and vegetables. Try to stick with organic produce. Cruciferous vegetables--such as bok choy, broccoli, brussels sprouts, cauliflower, kale, rutabagas, and turnips--are particularly effective at activating those enzymes in the liver that promote the natural detoxification process.  I stick to greens, greens, greens during these days.  You can add healthy oils on top, such as olive, avocado or coconut oil. You should eat portion sizes appropriate to your hand size as per Eat-Clean Diet Recharged (page 405) and eat 6 small meals each day. Healthy fats, Remember, NO breads or pastas. This is basically a strict Eat-Clean plan like The Eat-Clean Diet Stripped, however, protein is coming from brown rice and bone broth.

3) Consider herbs and supplements in addition to your standard multivitamin. Chlorophyll-rich "green" products—for example, those containing wheat grass, barley grass, or various types of algae—are a source of beta-carotene and other vitamins and minerals. Although studies are lacking, many people claim these green drinks and powders provide an energy boost. It is really important to take a good vitamin C supplement throughout the detox.

4) After 7 days return to your normal Eat-Clean Diet plan.

5) I maintained a normal workout schedule, but we are all different. You may need to go lighter. This could be an opportunity to try an equally detoxifying workout routine such as Bikram or Moksha yoga (aka hot yoga). Sweating it out in an infra-red sauna is similar. Remember, listen to your body to decide how much activity you can do.

**AS MENTIONED ABOVE, PLEASE DO NOT DETOX WHILE PREGNANT OR BREASTFEEDING**

  1. Tosca, I would love to see what it is you eat throughout the day. I notice that there are no proteins/meats listed for days 3-7 and I am guessing that is on purpose as part of the detox as well.

  3. I love the idea of doing a nice detox like this. I am wanting to transition back to a completely vegetarian diet and would love to get my body detoxed in preparation for that. I was a lacto-ovo vegetarian for nearly nine years and fell away from it in the last two years or so, with occasional fish and poultry...for me personally, I felt a lot healthier when I was meat free.

    I also have to say that I love that you continue to not only talk the talk but walk the walk. And that you are doing nutritional studies! I have been telling people recently that I have become so interested in health and fitness that I would love to study nutrition and exercise and do something in a professional capacity to help others. So thank you for continuing to educate yourself in order to motivate, inspire and teach. It is greatly appreciated.

  5. I have to admit I thought oh no! Tosca isn't going down this road when I read the blog title 7 day detox! Isn't Eating Clean about nourishing our bodies with good food? However my admiration returned after watching the video clip. I appreciate your comments regarding learning, leadership by example and experience. Although this isn't for me I admire that you are exploring beyond your existing expertise into different and undoubtly interesting fields relating to optimal health. I will follow the week with interest.

  12. This is a great detox plan. It has been my experience with raw foods and limiting the taxation on the digestive organs is very helpful. At one time I did 14 days of raw foods, including only brown rice after the first few days, primarly using salads with avacados or olives for good fat, and lots of water-only water. Note - for the first three days it was difficult with lots of detox effects, headaches, chills from the cooling effect of the greens, and lots of bathroom time. You can slow down the detox by introducing the cooked rice or broth. Results are not typical, but I shed 24 pounds in 14 days on this regiment... it was simply amazing how quickly the body recovered once you gave it what it needed.

    So if you aren't sure about doing it... think again!

  18. I think detoxing should be a lifestyle change. It means eliminating processed foods because these foods are full of chemicals and unnatural ingredients,so eliminating these packaged foods will allow your body to effectively detox. This detox diet will stop those blood sugar spikes and reduced those additive carb craving.

    I really want to do this detox!!! I teach a boot camp program 3 days a week plus do my own workouts with my husband at home. Would I have enough energy to still do my boot camp classes at least?

  24. I would love to do this detox, but I am currently breastfeeding my one year old. I mainly do this at night so would I be able to do this detox?? I know that my body is out of whack and need this done, but would the toxins leave my body via my BM?

  27. This is a great detox that I have carried out a few times. It makes a huge difference to how I look and feel both during and after the detox. I admit, I have a tendancy to stray from my clean eating with a huge appetite for junk food (sugary, salty, fast food...I love it all) but when I fall down the slippery slope and need to get back on track this is always a winner.

    I often end up with some light-headedness, nausea or headache by the end of day two so I take it a little easier if I can and if I can't I will have a little bone broth, a half cup of veg juice, or even having a small serving of fruit or veg for dinner the second day depending on how intense my schedule is.

    I've even carried out days 3-7 as a 7 day detox and while it's not the same by any means, I still see great results and feel fabulous once I'm done.
