Toronto 1/2 Marathon Training

My Running Gear

This morning my daughter and I decided to go on a 11km run in preparation for the upcoming Toronto 1/2 Marathon on October 17. The heat wave is coming to an end here in Southern Toronto, but it was no cooler this morning than any of the other hot humid days this week. We were set to run and the heat wasn't going to hold us back!

Well it held us back more than a little. The run was brutal! My lungs felt like they were fighting for air the entire 11kms and I stopped for numerous breaks along the way. Luckily we were able to jump in the pool for a cool down but it took me so long to untie my shoelaces my fingers were shaking so bad. I was left feeling extremely discouraged for the fast approaching race day. Yikes!

Ironically amongst my list of things to-do and web surfing today I was sent a link to an article from the Globe and Mail "How to Keep Your Head in the Race". Check out the wonderful tips they have to offer, I will definitely be putting these to good use the next time I hit the pavement.

Tired, sweaty and discouraged! But still alive.

Don't forget: help us help others and make your donations to Team Diabetes, our team at this year's Toronto Marathon. You have a chance to win a phone consultation with me and support an amazing cause! Follow this link for details.

Keep it tight,
Tosca Reno

  2. Tosca,
It's tough running in the heat. I hope you are recovering. It's finally cooling down.
Do you have a time frame you want to complete it in? You are so competitive with yourself, that's why I'm asking.

Good luck to you. I ran a marathon when I was 44 (4 yrs ago) and it's a killer training for the big day. I am planning on running a 2nd. one when I turn 50. :)

You continue to inspire me. Thanks.

  3. Wow sounds brutal! Good luck Tosca! You are part of my reason for doing the Tucson Half Marathon. The other reason is of course because my husband will be leaving for training for 5 months, so I needed something crazy and empowering for me to do. I'm excited for the both of us...but my half marathon isn't until December. Good luck lady!

  4. I'm with you sister! And will be there on October 17th. The humitidy has made it a wickely difficult week for training and knowing how fast you run I can only imagine the post run wipe out feeling! You two are amazing for staying the course even when it is tough! What a great inspiration you are for so many, including me!
    Love,
    G.

  5. I felt the same way on my last long training run! And, I was being harassed and chased by flies on the wooded trail I run on. I was so glad and the most SWEATY I've ever been when it was over!
I'm finished my $350 goal for Team Diabetes, and will be running with you on October 17th - looking forward to it! Sure hope I get a chance to meet you. :)
ps. I love hearing about your training runs, so I hope you blog a little more about it!

  6. Don't be discouraged, Silly!!! You'll be completely prepared once this humidity comes to an end. Try that same run tomorrow and you'll be shocked at how amazing you really ARE doing. It'll be a much better gauge!

  8. Thank you, thank you, thank you!! I have been so blessed to have found your books - I happened upon them at the grocery store and was intrigued, bought it and haven't looked back. I am a different woman because of following the Eat-Clean "Diet" - I was a new (and broken) divorcee and on disability for depression... I gained and gained, and lost all motivation for living and went on like that for TWO YEARS!! After now learning of food allergies (sugar, wheat, and milk), and following the Eat Clean Diet principles (and recipes), I have more energy than ever before, I am off my meds, am looking at career options AND... I started running. I am only up to 5k so far (started in July) but feel so amazing. My kids are adapting (ever so slowly) and it has been easier to blame the changes on my allergies... that has helped as they are sympathetic. God bless you as you teach, and encourage others!! I am a new woman (oh, and I will be forty in a couple months!!)

  9. It's frustrating when the weather doesn't want to cooperate with our training plan. ;) I hope the race day weather is more suitable for running. I did a half marathon a couple of weeks ago on a horribly humid day...not nearly as much fun!

You never know how a run will feel on any given day...all you can do is listen to your body and try to really enjoy the days that feel great because a yucky run day will inevitably follow at some point.

Hopefully with this yucky run day out of the way you will be due for an awesome run come race day. Good luck!!

  10. My husband and I did that run last year - His first....the start is a bit frantic however it was a great time and he did so well - just under 2 hours for his first half!!!So stay focused it is well worth the feeling of accomplishment when you cross that finish line!!!
